5 in 5 with Nick Bailey

This January we were able to take 5 minutes to chat with our January Millennium Farming Ambassador, Nick Bailey.

Nick manages a 700 cow dairy farm near Woodville for Ben and Nicky Allomes. They have a team of twelve over the course of the season with some full time and other part time or relief. As leaders, they work to structure the workloads around the needs and interests of their team, allowing them to have a good work/life balance.

The dairy runs a structure where farm work is categorized into essential and non essential work with non essential work being offered as packages of work, firstly to the team then to the local community.

1. In 5-10 words what is your farming philosophy?

A system that cares for people, environment and animals

2. What is your favourite time of the year on farm and why?

Calving- there is heaps going on and the team works really well together to get through it efficiently

3. In what ways do you recognise the good things your employees are doing? And how do you praise accordingly?

We have bbqs at the end of calving and end of the season as a thanks for all the hard work throughout. We also have a Christmas party where all the teams from the farms that Ben and Nicky run get together. We do a range of things like, plane rides over the farms, karaoke night to name a few.

4. What do you do to switch off from the farm?

I like to get off farm and do something I enjoy like tramping, catching up with mates.

5. How would you describe your leadership style?

Supportive, educational, easygoing, inclusive.

6. And because we have time for one more, use five words to describe your farming team....

Supportive, easy going, hard working, knowledgeable, team players

Thanks Nick! We appreciate the thoughts you had to share and look forward to the conversation around these topics.
